NYS budget negotiations are moving quickly. The NYS Assembly is supporting a 2% salary increase for direct support professionals who provide hands-on care for people with developmental disabilities. The NYS Senate is also calling for a salary increase but has not specified the amount. 
Competition will be fierce for the available funds. We must speak up now to let our legislators know how critical a salary increase is for the direct support professionals.
Call your state Senator and Assembly member. Also call Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Coalition Leaders Dean Skelos and Jeffrey Klein. Tell them:
The direct support workers needs a raise!
1. Your Senator at Senate switchboard 518-455-2800. The switchboard can help you to find your Senator.
2. Your Assembly Member at Assembly switchboard 518-455-4100. The switchboard can help you to find your Assembly member.
3. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver at 518-455-3791

5. Senator Jeffrey Klein at 518-455-3595

Or go to and click on “Legislative Action” on the top, right side of the screen.  
Then, click on the circle that says “Get involved”.  
After that, click on “Take Action” for the appropriate issue (853’s, Early Intervention or Direct Support Professionals) (feel free to send letters and make calls on all 3!)
Fill in your information and either send emails or paper letters to your elected officials.
