East and Engel Golfers are Big Winners at Venture’s 2009 Tournament
Venture golfers took to the Germonds Park Course in Clarkstown on September 26, for the agency’s annual tournament. The beautiful blustery fall day offered a stark contrast to the grueling competition that heated up on the greens as a field of nearly 80 competitors swung their clubs in hopes of bringing home the really big trophy.
“Everyone played much better this year,†said Tournament Director Barbara Reece. Overall the scores for the 2009 tournament were lower than previous years evidencing the improving quality of the play.
Howard of the East residence was the tournament’s overall first place winner and Mindy of the Engel House took top honor for the women. Don of the Hibernian House was the second place men’s winner and Sandy of East took the number two spot for the women.
“I just tried to keep the ball on the green,†Howard explained. “I had my eye on Don and had a sense that he was hitting the ball well but I did manage to keep ahead of him through the last 4 holes to pull off the win,†he explained.
An unbelievable eighteen players scored a hole-in-ones. Four players, including the tournament’s oldest player, George of Venture North, had two holes-in-one for the day. Other double hole-in-one winners included: Terrance of Clucas House, Denise of North and Tom of the Living Center. A host of other awards and prizes were also offered to a number of the competitors for their extraordinary performance on the green.
A hotdog barbeque and awards party followed hosted by Theresa Freson and the Recreation staff. Thanks also to the Venture Foundation staff.
The tournament was made possible by the hospitality of the Town of Clarkstown with special thanks to Supervisor Alex Gromack and Councilman George Hoehmann and to the Town’s Parks and Recreation staff.
Camp Venture also gratefully acknowledges Susan Solar and the volunteers from Clarkstown South High School who not only made the tournament possible, but also really made it great fun for our golfers.
