Holiday Show Plays to a Packed House

It was standing room only for the Creative Arts Department’s Holiday Musical on Sunday December 6, as a capacity crowd at the Venture Center’s Colman Gromack auditorium was treated to an all singing, all dancing, celebration of the season. “Bing Crosby would have been proud,” said one audience member as act after act made for a medley of fun.

A spirited dance number by Peter, Lisa Andy Joanne and Cyndi Hoover performed to the music of “Baby its Cold Outside” opened the show. And, in a program that balanced a mix of music and dance but also traditional and non-traditional Hanukah, Christmas and seasonal pieces made for an lively and entertaining afternoon.

With Arie’s keyboard solo, “Light Up the Night,’ he amazed the crowd with his musicianship. Similarly, musical duets that paired Sam Leopold with Lee and later with Terrance combined rhythm and song in blues numbers that departed for the seasonal theme. The After School kids’ “Sugar Plum Fairy” dance performed with Cyndi Hoover was too cute for words and Maria’s “White Christmas” harmonica piece also performed with Sam Leopold returned a Venture favorite to the stage for yet another commanding performance.

Peter, Venture Murphy House’s elder statesman and Arie teamed up for the telling of a Hannuka story, which offered a poignant interlude from the frolicking fun of the more festive numbers.

And then there were the rousing and imaginative original performances from the Academy Singers.  “Holiday Lite”, a commentary on our economy, “Long Live Frosty”, a green-theme piece and a very special; “ A Brand New John Frank for Christmas” which was enthusiastically led by a beaming Mr. Frank.

The show was emceed by David and Sam who offered humor and commentary on the seasonal standards. With “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” the jolly guy made an appearance and joined the cast for a spirited final number, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and, indeed, it is! It always is at Camp Venture where the spirit of friendship camaraderie and good times are always on the playbill
