Rock of Ages Rocks the Venture Center

The Venture Center boomed with the sounds of iconic 80’s rock and roll as the Creative Arts players and the Rockademy band, brought their version of the 2012 rock musical, Rock of Ages, to the Coleman-Gromack Auditorium on June 6, and 7.

Producer -Director, Krista Bilodeau staged a lively production that combined video, live theater, taped and live musical performances. The production featured performers from both the day program and evening recreation and their respective staff.

Our story begins in 1987, as Sherrie Christian (played by Jen A.) leaves her staid life in small town Kansas to pursue her dreams of becoming famous in the rough and tumble world of L.A. rock and roll. Drew Boley (Lee P.), aspiring rock star, is preparing for another night of work at The Bourbon Room when Sherrie arrives in a state. Drew comforts Sherrie and, upon learning of her situation, he gets her a job at the Bourbon Room.

The club’s owner, Dennis Dupree (Robert H.), and his associate, Lonny Barnett (Larry B), are trying to find a way to deal with money problems that threaten the club and the Mayor’s animosity of all things rock, hoping that they can keep their place and their dreams going. In hopes of raising enough money, Dennis and Lonny decide to book Stacee Jaxx (Michael S.), a famous rock star from the band Arsenal, to perform at the Bourbon. The Mayor would rather shut them down and to rid L.A. of its “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” image.

In the end, the Mayor decides to quit work and make music. He is tired of playing the bad guy and wants to rock with the rest of them. So, he gathers his old band buddies and puts together an 80’s Reunion Concert (Rockademy) to save Rock n’Roll and the famous Bourbon Room!

Randi B, Zac C, Ryan F, Teresa B, Jennel T, along with staff, Music Specialist, Sam Leopold and Theater Specialist, Arianna Pallens and recreation staff, Sarah Lukens and Dana Duro rounded out the cast of this 80’s era romp. Also, Jeff Spindel, Ed Wllock and Arianna Pallens supported the Rockademy band and Steven Sicher and Mike K. helped with the staging along with Michael Bilodeau and Richard Behrends who did the AV support and videography.

Jen A, was wonderful as the star-stuck girl from the heartland and Lee P. was also solid as her leading man and love interest. The supporting cast was exceptional as the dramatic performances of this new-classic musical segued into a rousing finale led by the Rockademy band.

The Thursday June 6, performance packed the Center with friends and family. From the opening overture to the band’s finale, the show had them rockin’ in the isles and cheering with every twist of the plot. It was a great night and the best show ever!

Many thanks to all involved and most of all to our great performers and the wonderful creative staff who brought this exceptional performance to the stage.
