Rock Your Day: SANY event at the Venture Center

The “Rock Your Day” event rocked the Venture Center on July 11, 2013 as people came from as far away as Sullivan County to be part of a conversation about new day opportunities. The event was a Self Advocacy Association of New York (SANY) event run by Jordan Jankus of SANY that featured a dialogue between self advocates and offered a wealth of community resource information gathered by Brigid Pigot of the County of Rockland’s Department of Mental Health.

“Day program’s for people with developmental disabilities are changing,” explains Camp Venture’s Executive Director, Dan Lukens. “ It is important that people start to consider different options and look at new kinds of opportunities. This event was about helping people to start to do that,” he said.

There were representatives offering information on everything from volunteer opportunities with the Rockland Farm Alliance, to public transportation, to how to start a small business. And, people from area developmental disabilities agencies were there with information on employment services along with state officials who had the latest updates on a world of new support options.

Mostly though, it was an information sharing event where people with developmental disabilities had a chance to talk to each other about what they were doing, whether it was a job, volunteer opportunity or whatever. And, indeed, as one speaker perhaps said it best, “you don’t know what you can do until you try.”

Many thanks to Brigid and Jordan for the event, to Long Island University for the use of their space and to Venture’s own, Barbara Voellinger and Jen Sernotti for all of their hard work.
