St. Patrick’s Day on Main Street
By JeanMarie Byman
On Friday, March 18, 2011 the Venture Main Street program hosted it’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party at the Strayton Center from noon until 2 PM.
Special invited guests included friends from the Academy and Select day habilitation programs.
Local musician and friend, Bill Reiner, was happy to be invited back to perform old Irish classics with the crowd enjoying the opportunity to show off their dancing skills and interact with friends.
Each year in preparation for the big party, the group gathers recipes and participates in what we refer to as “The Great Irish Soda Bread Bake off”. From your great Aunt Rose’s recipe to Emeril and Martha Stewart, we mixed and measured numerous items and created masterpieces. We divide the our crew into groups supervised by one staff and when all breads are cooked we judge them on how good they taste. And, of course, we never reveal which recipe or team is which until the judging is completed.
This writer who, once again, did not come in first or even second in the bake off, nonetheless, has high hopes for next year. After a visit from an auditor on the cook off day, I was promised an authentic recipe authored by an Irish lady who, as legend has it, mastered it’s perfection through her 98 years of baking experience. Ah, I can smell it now and, who knows, next year I might even make the top three.
