Suns, 34 over Bombers, 29: Wildcats edged out by Lakers
The Venture home teams were in it to the closing buzzer as the Willcats and Suns both competed in the final round of tournament play on May 26, at the St Agatha’s arena in Nanuet. The Venture Suns defeated the BOCES Bombers in the early game. The Venture Willcats came up just a field goal short in the late contest against the HV-DDSO Lakers as a packed house was treated to an exciting evening of court side action.
An exceptionally warm night and an unairconditioned arena were apparently not enough to keep fans away as the crowd packed the seats and were lined up out into the parking lot for these last deciding games of a hotly contested tournament. The tension was palpable as the opening tip off set the Suns- Bombers game in motion.
The lead changed hands several times in the first half of play. A fast and aggressive Bombers team showed a clear advantage in speed and conditioning and were very successful moving the ball early on. The Suns, however, had the the height and the depth and used their bench effectively to counter the quickness and endurance of their younger opponents.
At the final buzzer it was tied at 27 as the game went into overtime. The Suns moved ahead in the first minute as their confidence grew. Those feelings, however, would fade quickly as the Bombers came roaring back to overcome their deficit and retake the lead. Outside shots from the Suns missed their mark as the aggressiveness of the Bomber on the boards dominated.
But, by the end, it was all the Suns. The Suns big man, Howard, shut down the Bombers scoring as he dominated the defensive boards. Don and Mark matched the Bombers speed as Mike and J.Pat steadied the Suns and took over on the offensive boards. In the end, it was about rebounds and second shots as the Suns got them and the Bombers didn’t .
Key field goals by Mike, Mark and Don got things going in the over time but it was J.Pat whose leadership pulled the Suns ahead when it counted.
It was an effective team win for the Suns. The final score was 34 to 29.
J.Pat took the MVP honors.
In later action, the Venture Wildcats were edged out by the HV-DDSO Lakers. Johnny, of Hillcrest House, was named the Wildcat’s MVP for that game.
