The Spirit of Giving

The Spirit of Giving

The holiday spirit is alive and well this year, as it is every year, at Murphy House. Every year the house staff plays Santa and adopts a child. This holiday season, it was no different.

“Shirley” is a little girl whose wish list for Santa might have been an impossible dream given her circumstance.  It might have been if not for some especially caring people. Working through the retailer BJ’s, the Murphy staff and their team of busy elves, aka residence family members James, Mary and Phyllis, went to work to try to make Shirley’s wish come true.

It was a team effort that involved shopping, a delivery and a “teachable moment.” As the Murphy House staff explained: “The best part of it was when we explained to the guys why we were giving the gifts and then how they, in turn, relayed that message. As we approached the counter at BJ’s to hand over the gifts, James, Mary and Phyllis explained in their own words what we were doing. It was a moment of triumph for them and by their smiles and expressions of happiness it was evident that, for them giving was, indeed, better than receiving. We were so proud.”

The last several years Murphy House did the Gift Giving Tree at Stony Point Shop Rite. This year BJ’s sponsored a similar idea and so our thanks to them as well for the opportunity.

Now a Murphy House tradition, the spirit of giving, is brightening the lives of staff and residents alike as they work hand in hand to make the holidays a special time for needy children in their community.

Many thanks to all of the Murphy House staff and residents.
